New danger zones to be identified as mishaps rise

In view of the rising number of fatal road mishaps, the district police have plans to identify fresh danger zones.  The vehicle drivers found violating the speed-limit will also be prosecuted and even forwarded to the jail. In the last two months alone 35 mishaps have been reported in the city.

A police official said that due to lack of check post reckless driving is also on the rise. In the last one decade vehicles have increased on the roads. Four wheelers have registered manifold increase with each family possessing at least two-wheelers on an average.

He said that the traffic wing of the district police will conduct a survey of different areas keeping in view the vehicular traffic and busy hours. “We had identified danger zones where regular mishaps take place. We want to mark fresh zones where cases are taking place. This will help to curb the prevailing situation,” said the official.

Meanwhile, the only  interceptor vehicle which used to curb rash driving by the four-wheelers and SUVs on important roads, including marine drive has got defunct after its camera was damaged, causing the vehicle to be put back in its garage at the Police Control Room a couple of days ago.  In absence of the Interceptor vehicle, the four-wheeler riders are feeling free for rash-driving in the city.

An official confirmed about the interceptor vehicle getting defunct after its camera was broken down due to an accidental fall during handling. He pointed out the 11-kms-long marine drive had all along been the focus point for the interceptor vehicle as the vehicle riders tend to drive at a high speed in this stretch, resulting in frequent road mishaps.

“We have already taken initiative to get it repaired by a concerned agency.  It is expected that the interceptor vehicle will be back in place for the service in a month time,” the official said.

Speaking about the speed-limit method that the district police was going to introduce, the official said that the steel city has a number of accident-prone areas which have been taken care of specially.

Like the points along the Fire Temple on the Straight Mile Road, Hati-Ghora Temple on Pipeline Road, Bistupur-Jugsalai road near the Jugsalai police station, Sonari-Bistupur road near the Beldih crossing, Bhuiyadih-Agrico Road at Bhuiyadih, Golmuri-Burmamines Road near RD Tata Technical Training Centre and Ring Road in Telco are earmarked as accident prone.
