Nature smiles as humans stay home

The novel Coronavirus is claiming numerous lives around the globe, but it is surprising how the pandemic is affecting the environment in more ways than one. In spite of the lockdown being lifted, with humans in Ranchi still cooped up in their homes to avoid containment, nature is healing itself.

According to experts, with lesser vehicles plying the City roads and most of the industries also closed, a significant difference can be felt in the air quality here. Since the beginning of industrialization, mankind has exploited nature for more than 200 years and earth has now taken this time to heal herself.

“One of the most important positive effects of this virus is that it has led to a tremendous reduction in the pollution levels. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Ranchi is presently varying between 50- 65 whereas before the outbreak of the virus it used to be somewhere between 125- 130.

The atmosphere is also free of dust particles and poisonous gases like carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. People suffering from asthma do not require an inhaler at the moment,” said Environmentalist and Assistant Professor Department of Geology Ranchi University, Dr Nitish Priyadarshi.

In the month of May and June where temperature levels would soar to around 42- 43 degree Celsius, this year it has crossed the 40 degree mark just a few times. Due to frequent showers and lower temperature levels, the ground water level has not depleted this summer which is unlike any other year. With all hotels and malls shut, there is no misuse of water as well.

“There is a reason why the Britishers had made Ranchi their summer capital. When just last year it would be impossible to sit without a cooler or an AC, this year it is hardly required. It seems as if the Ranchi of yester years is back,” added Priyadarshi.

Birds like Bulbul which had vanished for some years can now be seen in the clear blue skies. A wide variety of butterflies can also be seen hovering around the City. It is also the ideal time for stargazing as numerous stars and constellations can be seen at night.

“With lack of air, sound and light pollution, birds can be heard chirping as early as 4 am. It is generally humans who visit a zoo to see caged animals but right now the situation has reversed. In various parts of the world animals can be seen wandering the streets wondering where we humans have vanished. Nature can be seen in its true colours,” said the Environmentalist. It is high time for humans to learn a lesson or two. As a habit people should now impose a self lockdown and leave their homes only if needed. Once a week they should also opt for a public transport system.

The government should also impose a complete lockdown once a month. With so many migrant labourers coming back, the public transport system should be encouraged. Battery operated vehicles should be brought to Jharkhand which will serve a dual purpose of providing employment and healing nature,” he added.
