Mumbai Dabbawalas share success secrets

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Yi -Jharkhand chapter (Young Indians) held a rendezvous with the famous  'Mumbai Dabbawalas' in the city. Dr Pawan Agrawal, president, Mumbai Dabbawala Education Centre, spent an evening with over 300 participants from corporates, schools and colleges in rapt attention, who were amazed by the simplicity of perfection achieved in operation by the 'Mumbai Dabbawalas'.

'The tradition and institution of Dabbawalas is unique to Mumbai owing to the unique corridor type geography of the city coupled with the convenience of local trains" said Dr. Agrawal, who has done his Ph.D. covering the six sigma in supply chain excellence, achieved by the community through their day to day operation. This is also the reason why the system has thrived in Mumbai. 'Very often the Dabbawalas get astonished when they are told that their operation is a perfect example of six sigma, as for them even one mistake in a million is unpardonable. They have been able to achieve the excellence in operation not because of technology but because of commitment and sincerity." added Dr. Agrawal.

During the Session Dr Pawan Agrawal shared the success mantra of Mumbai Dabbawala Association. He said just two thoughts; "work is worship" and "customer is God" are driving the 125 year old institution. That is the culture and attitude with which 5000 dabbawalas work.'The lessons by Mumbai Dabbawalas will ingrain in us the sense of respect required to achieve the desired success. The best practices adopted by Mumbai Dabbawalas will help us in adopting their team work and discipline in our daily lives.” he said.

“Young India Jharkhand will strive towards bringing such examples of excellence and dedication to the Young Indians in the city. We have launched this platform under the aegis of CII to connect with young minds and get them to appreciate excellence at the grassroots level.' added Vishal K Agarwalla, Chairman, Yi Jharkhand chapter.
