More than 28,000 traffic rules violators have been fined in three months from September 1 to November 30 this year. The data provided by the city traffic police show that 28,363 people were fined in this duration through e-challan and the total fine imposed was around Rs. 2.15 crore.
The data shows that the highest number of traffic rule violators was observed at Jail Chowk with 2036 persons fined within these three months. This was followed by 1,820 people being fined at Booty More and 1,261 at HEC Main Gate.
Argora Chowk, Firayalal Chowk and New Market Chowk are the other roundabouts where more than 1000 people were booked for violation of traffic rules during these three months.
The least number of violations was reported at Kokar Chowk, with just 58 people fined, followed by 124 at Plaza Chowk and 221 at Hinoo Chowk.
Traffic SP Ajit Peter Dungdung said, “The most common type of rules violation is not wearing of helmet and triple riding. People fail to understand that following traffic rules is for their own safety.”
Data of ministry of road transport and highways (MORTH) show that 443 riders and 456 pillion riders were killed across Jharkhand in 2017 as they were not wearing helmets.
While not wearing helmet, rash driving, jumping signals and triple riding are some of the offences which are taken seriously by the traffic constables, some serious offences like not wearing seatbelt and talking on phone while driving often go unnoticed.
The Traffic SP said, “We are trying to sensitize our constables so that they take these two offences seriously.”
The SP informed that talking on phone while driving and not wearing seatbelt are among two of the four traffic offences listed under the guidelines of committee on road safety of Supreme Court where driving license of the violator can be suspended on the first offence.
The guidelines say that violation of these rules can lead to suspension of license for three months on first offence, six months on second offence and revocation of license on the third offence. “Once the license is revoked, the person can never get a driving license issued again anywhere across the state,” SP said.
