More rainfall to provide relief to farmers: experts

Published on:

Regardless of the deficiency level recorded in the previous month including the scarcity level registered in the first week of July, the weathermen are expecting a favourable condition for the advancement of South-West (SW) Monsoon across the State. According to MET experts rainfall activities across Jharkhand is likely to increase after July 13, bringing much respite for the farmers. According to the data, 35 per cent rainfall deficit has been registered by far.

“There is a fair chance of widespread rainfall across the State from July 13 onwards. For a few days, light to moderate rainfall will lash different parts of the State. There are possibilities that the deficiency level will be filled up as formation of low pressure area over North-West (NW) Bay of Bengal is strong,” said Senior Scientist, MET Observatory Centre – Ranchi, RS Sharma.

“If in the coming next two week, the intensity of low pressure system formation is good, the deficit level will also be covered up. In 2017, the deficit level gap was filled up in the last week of July,” added Sharma. Meanwhile, Agro-MET expert of Birsa Agricultural University (BAU), A Wadood has termed the present condition quite favourable for the farmers. “For farming activities, the present weather condition is encouraging. During sowing season, light rainfall is the pre-requisite.”

As per the data of MET Ranchi released in June, 129 mm rainfall was recorded covering the entire State then. According to the weathermen, in one month over 206.7 mm rainfall is considered normal. Meanwhile, the rainfall statistics released on Monday suggested that 187.1 mm rainfall has been recorded till date covering June and the first week of July (1 to 9). In 1.5 month, 290 mm rainfall is categorized normal.

According to the data, maximum deficit level was registered in Khunti district with - 79 per cent rainfall. Khunti recorded merely 74.5 mm rainfall in a month since the onset of monsoon season while 353.4 mm rainfall is considered normal for the respective district. Similarly, Chatra, Koderma including Garhwa had recorded lowest rainfall from June 1 to July 9, 2018.

Following all the criteria of the MET, about 1092 mm rainfall throughout the monsoon season is categorized under normal or above normal category for Jharkhand.
