Monsoon showers have thrown life out of gear in the city, exposing the lack of preparedness of the authorities who refuse to learn lessons from past incidents of waterlogging. After facing the brunt of flood fury, the city grapples with water clogging rain.
Lack of preparedness for the rainy season has come to the fore at various locations in the city. The busy Tatanagar Station-Jugsalai-Bistupur road has suffered due to waterlogging at certain points with deep water.
The four points where water logging has added to the woes of the commuters are Tata Pigment gate (Jugsalai). Areas like Garib Nawaz Colony, Gaushala Road in Jugsalai, Old Sitaramdera, Refugee Colony, Nehru Colony in Kasidih are reeling under clogged drains.
People are complaining against the attitude of the local civic bodies. “Despite claims from the local authorities the recent flood has exposed lack of preparedness. People have suffered a lot. A drain is overflowing near our complex though I went to lodge a complaint at Jugsalai Municipality but despite assurances the situation remains the same. The stink and unhygienic atmosphere bothers commuters, especially pedestrians using footpaths along the roads,” noted a resident of Jugsalai.
The drain passing through Refugee Colony in Golmuri has also turned into a dumping yard . The drain has water flowing from Tata Steel works and comes under the command area of JNAC.
“The situation in our area is pathetic. I have noted that the cleaning work has been done in a hurry and heaps of garbage have left unattended leading to threat of clogging of drains again and spread of diseases,” said a local and Sakchi-based businessman.
Moreover areas like Birsanagar, Baridih Bustee, Carriage Colony and at certain places in Govindpur where people live in bustees in a great number drainage or sewerage system have gone haywire.
“Work on cleaning of drains was being done satisfactorily at almost all the locations in Mango. However, there were some issues on encroachment of drains in Mango and a directive has been issued to start an anti-encroachment drive after verification of the spots from Jamshedpur circle office,” said the official.
Areas like Kunwar Basti, Chepapul Road near Amarjyoti School, Kalikanagar (near Mayank Mrinal Hospital), near Dimna Residency (in Dimna Roundabout), near Moon City (Dimna Road), near Parasnagar (Dimna Road) have been hit due to rain.
Incidentally, the city has nearly 20 big drains out of which 15 drains have effluents of companies passing through it while there are nearly 50 small drains in different localities of the city.
