Monsoon reaches State

People took a sigh of relief as the much awaited southwest monsoon reached Jharkhand on Friday with sporadic rainfall in several areas of the State.

“The southwest monsoon hit Jharkhand from the southeast and northeast areas, starting from Jamshedpur in the North and Dumka in the northeast part of the State. The wind pattern will be from the north to south direction in the current monsoon scenario. In the next 3-4 days, almost all the areas of Jharkhand including Ranchi will witness rainfall,” said RS Sharma, Scientist (B) at a Press conference at Indian Meteorological Department Ranchi centre here on Friday.

“Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi has already issued long range forecast saying that Jharkhand alongwith the other parts of the country will observe moderate rainfall this monsoon,” he said when asked about the nature of the monsoon.

Explaining about the quantity of the rainfall, he said, “Jharkhand belongs to the North-East homogenous part where there are 96 per cent chances of long period average rainfall.”

“Talking about the monsoon pattern of Jharkhand, usually its onset is between 10-12 June but it keeps on varying every year. This time it was delayed by 4-5 days which is very normal,” he said while explaining the delay in the arrival of monsoon this year.

“With the appearance of monsoon, the transition phase starts and the concerned area become a lot more humid and the nearby areas where the monsoon is yet to arrive gets dry and the temperature rises as a result. The transition phase includes severe weather activities including thunderstorm and lightning which is prominently observed in the state though there is no serious threat expected,” he added.

Elaborating the monsoon pattern, he further added, “Monsoon includes a particular wind pattern, humidity profile where the humidity should vary from lower atmosphere to the middle atmosphere and a low floating cloud is also seen during the season.”

“From June 20 a good amount of heavy rainfall is expected in Ranchi,” he stated.
