In a major twist in the money grab case where Rs21.9 lakh was recovered from a hotel room during a raid conducted by the police ahead of the Municipal elections on Sunday, an application has been filed in the court of Judicial Magistrate on Friday. A person named Akil-ur-Rahman claiming his right over the seized money has requested the court to release the amount as the polls are over.

“One Akil-ur-Rahman in his application, has claimed his rights on the money seized by the police from the City Palace hotel on April 7, and has requested the court to return the seized amount to him,” said advocate Akhauri Shekher Kumar.

“In his application the petitioner has said that in a meeting of intellectuals held at Bihar Club on March 30, a five member committee was formed to help the honest and deserving candidates contesting the Municipal elections both in respect to money and support. The seized amount was collected from some of the respected businessmen in order to help those identified candidates,” added the advocate. It has not been mentioned anywhere in the application, how the money reached to Hotel City Palace ahead of the polls.

According to Rahman, the money was to be distributed by the committee among the deserving candidates a day ahead of the polls to be used by them. The five member committee also includes the name of Jaiprakash Gupta, Ajay Jain, Ranvijay Singh, Afsar Khan Alias Bablu. Several others have also been named in the application who were present in the meeting on April 30.

It has also been mentioned in the application that the sealed cash was neither stolen nor gathered through illegal means but collected through voluntary donations from respected businessmen nor professionals of the society which needs to be returned back to the donors as it could not be used during the election process.

Matter will be taken up by the court on Monday.
