MNPNS students take Skype route to education

Students of Motilal Nehru Public School (MNPS) can look forward to carry join research on water study with their counterparts in The Netherlands. Students of Class IX of the Sakchi-based school on Tuesday connected with their partner school De Goudse Warden in Gouda in The Netherlands via Skype.

About 20 students studying water balance interacted with their Dutch students through Skype on Tuesday. The students exchanged information over the Skype. While students of MNPS explained about Jamshedpur, its nature and the major rivers, their friends also shared similar information from their country.

The students who are working on the project have already visited Subernarekha and Kharkai river, the Chandil dam, the Sitarampur dam and the Galudih dam. After the study and the collection of data, the students shall seek help from the Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board (JSPCB) and Jusco to learn about the pollution level, its causes and consumption of water. “As technology is the mainstay of the initiative, and is driven by the passion of teachers,” said a student.

He went on to add that the city expands rapidly on the periphery as people move in from far and near. There is a rapid boom in developments of layouts, villas and apartments all around. These developments range from 10 acres to as much as 1,000 acres. The water and sanitation utilities simply cannot keep pace with the expansion of the city and this boom. Developments on the periphery therefore have to depend on their own sources of water and manage waste-water. Groundwater is almost the only source of water and it is fast running out.

“The idea is to do a water balance study for your development area. Understand demand phase-wise and at full occupancy and then map sustainable sources that can provide the water. Groundwater and tanker water are not sustainable sources. We need to avoid unnecessary demand for water such as large water bodies and landscapes which are water intensive. The interaction will help us to adopt their working model too,” added a student.
