First-time a two days nternational seminar on safety and health in steel industry was organised by Joint Committee on Safety, Health & Environment in the Steel Industry in association with SAIl.
JCSSI is a unique national level bipartite forum of management and trade union representatives from the major reputed steel producing companies, both public as well as private sector.
Governor Droupadi Murmu was present as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering on the issue of safety, health and environment the Governor said, “A safe working environment for all the employees and an accident free working place should be the top most priority for the management of an iron and steel plant. Historically, iron and steel making consisted of dangerous processes and prone to accidents. Today, many steel organisations in the world recognise that this is no longer an appropriate statement for a modern and technically advanced steel industry.”
“Safety in workplace should be the top priority in the iron and steel plant. Safety depends very much on the employee’s reaction to potential hazards. The responsibility for the management is to provide the safest possible physical conditions, but for safety, it is always necessary to obtain everyone’s cooperation in the safety programs,” she further added.
As many as 200 delegates from steel producing companies, equipment manufacturers and educational institutions representing approximately 45 organisations took part in the deliberations. Apart from this, a technical exhibition has also been displayed by 11 leading equipment manufactures of safety products from India and abroad. 34 expert speakers from the industry and academia gave their presentations on the subject of safety and occupational health. A souvenir of technical papers was also released by the chief guest.
Key note address was delivered by Heink Reimink, Director (Safety, Technology & Environment), Worldsteel Association having headquarters at Brussels, Belgium. He gave inputs about global safety scenario and stressed upon the importance of interaction among the various steel plants and stakeholders.
