Mayoral polls: Verification of booths commences

Barely a week after parliamentary election, the district administration is gearing up for another election — election for the post of Mayor of Ranchi Municipal Election.

The RMC has begun verification of booths for conducting mayoral polls and has constituted teams to verify booths under four assembly constituencies — Ranchi, Hatia, Kanke and Khijri. The municipal body has been asked to verify close to 900 booths in four assembly constituencies.“We have received instructions from district administration to start verification process. The process is underway and it will be completed in next few days,” said RMC CEO, Manoj Kumar.

Nonetheless, the State Election Commission (SEC) is yet to decide date for issuing notification and is awaiting the ongoing General Elections to conclude to make a move in the direction. Notably, the General Elections will end on May 16 with final results on all seats. “let the General Election over then we will decide,” said an official of State Election Commission.

According to sources in the SEC, the elections are likely to be conducted in the last week of June. The commission in the past had expresses complete preparedness for conducting mayoral polls and has been of the view that mayoral election is similar to conducting assembly elections hence everything is already in place and the commission only needs to announce the election schedule. Incidentally, post of Mayor of RMC is lying vacant since April 2013 when the mayoral election was rescinded by the commission. The municipal body has been functioning under Deputy Mayor since the new RMC board came into existence.
