Markets across the State capital were seen buzzing with activity as Ranchiites stepped out in huge numbers on Thursday on account of Dhanteras shopping. In spite of the Covid- 19 pandemic while traders were expecting a low footfall, shopkeepers claim that sales have been much better than their expectations.
“This year has been tough for everyone but for Diwali with the kind of faith people have shown in us, it has been absolutely overwhelming. Despite the fear of Covid-19, there was a huge turnout at our store on the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras. The most popular items being sold include idols of Ganesh- Lakshmi, silver utensils and coins of course. There has been a downfall in terms of corporate gifting but for personal use people have gone overboard with shopping,” said Nidhi Jain, owner of The Silver Studio, Circular Road, Ranchi.
Flooded with earthen diyas, designer diyas, torans, idols of gods and goddesses, crackers, decorative lights and other household items, the market in Lalpur had numerous people from all walks of life who had come out to celebrate the festival but with caution.
“How can one step out to buy sweets, candles and diyas for Diwali. I have bought marigold flowers and a packet of rangoli colours to decorate my house. Though we are unable to visit friends and family this year, I have also got some boxes of sweets packed to be sent over to their houses. While doing my shopping, I have been trying to follow all social distancing norms,” said home maker Jahnavi, a resident of Kokar.
“Generally I visit Upper Bazar for all my Diwali shopping including diyas, crackers and dry fruits but this time I decided to do all of it from a shop closer to home. With teenagers at home who are eager to burst crackers, I have bought only a handful packets of the anar, chakri, phuljhadi and rocket as against a huge quantity that I buy every year. For three to four new sets of clothes that are bought every year on Diwali, this time we decided to donate the ones not being used and add colour to somebody’s festivities,” said Pawan Kumar, a senior citizen.
