Many voters fail to register names in electoral rolls

Hundreds of eligible voters appear to be on the verge of losing their right to vote in the upcoming elections for failing to get their name registered in the electoral roll prepared for Ranchi Assembly constituency.

The last date for getting enrolled in the electoral roll ended on October 15. Although the date has not been extended, voters who have failed to locate Booth level Officers in their respective areas, are flocking the office of District Electoral Officer to make an enquiry about the resumption of the process. “It is difficult to locate BlOs in my area. But what is more annoying is that we are getting a lukewarm response from the authorities at the electoral office when we try to obtain any information about getting name registered in the electoral roll,” VK Sharma, a resident of Bariatu.

Interestingly, while on one hand people are desperate for getting enrolled in the voters list on the other the district administration is yet to receive communication from the office Chief Electoral Officer of Jharkhand to continue the revision process. The revision process is undertaken to include new voters and deleting inactive voters from the list.

“We have not received any notice to continue to the revision process,” said SDO (Sadar) Ranchi Ameet Kumar. The drive which started from September 2 was extended up to October 15 to meet the objective of synchronizing the electoral roll figures with the census data of 2011 besides improving the EP ratio in Jharkhand. Notably, the Cabinet (Election) department had received more than 4 lakh fresh applications till about a fortnight ago.
