A 35-year-old man made an abortive attempt to commit suicide by jumping into Subernarekha river from Mango bridge, under the Mango police station area, on Sunday.

The man identified as Mohammed Haider succeeded to take a plunge into the river, but escaped unhurt as he fell on a thick bed of water hyacinth. Though the bridge is well equipped with safety nets but still he succeeded to jump into the river.

The incident took place at smaller bridge located adjoining Jaiprakash Narayan Setu.  As the man jumped down into the river, the fall attracted the attention of the people who were taking bath in the river.  Soon some of them went to the spot where the man was lying and subsequently dragged him out of the bed of the water hyacinth.

According to sources, Haider who was a resident of Old Purulia Road in Mango was soon handed over to police whom the rescuers called at the bank of Subernarekha.

Officer-in-charge, Mango police station, Fulan Nath confirmed about the incident. "The man who attempted to commit suicide was identified as Mohammed Haider, a resident of Old Purulia Road.  He had a fight with his wife and mother in the early morning and had soon come to take this drastic step, but he was fortunately unhurt," said Nath.

The officer-in-charge, when asked, said that the man had climbed on the eight-feet-high iron-net fixed on either sides of both the old bridge and also the new bridge. Notably, the local administration with the help of civic bodies of Mango and Jamshedpur had in March this year installed iron-net on either sides of the two bridge after the spot had become a suicide point increasingly. Mango bridge from where people, mostly youngsters, tend to jump to commit suicide falls under Sitaramdera and Mango police station areas,  respectively. On an average two incidents of attempted suicide take place at the Mango bridge every month.
