A major fire gutted two classrooms, also damaging some of the cabins used by the faculty members of Indian Institute of Management (IIM), here on Monday morning. luckily no person was harmed during the fire as it broke out in the morning hours.

Though the fire department is yet to investigate the cause of the fire, police and the staffs present there, suspected that the blaze was originated through a short circuit.

“The damages caused due to the fire is yet to be assessed,” said IIM Director Shailendra Singh, who visited the spot immediately after the incident.

The fire broke out at its fifth floor early in the morning on Monday, which involved six fire tenders for more than three hours to get control over it.

“Smoke was noticed in the morning at 6 am by one of the staffs and the fire officials stationed in the building were rushed to check its intensity, but it was too late as two of the classrooms had been gutted into the fire completely,” said an IIM staff.

DG (Fire) BB Pradhan said that suggestions have already been given to the building construction department to implement them which require massive reconstruction efforts.  Fire instruments are there in the newly constructed government buildings, but in old buildings there is no such provision.

"We have already written to the building construction department to implement the recommendations made by us but nothing has been done so far in this regard as they require massive reconstruction efforts by them,” said Pradhan. To ensure 100 per cent fire safety in the government buildings, all the suggestions has to be implemented by them, he added.
