lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Tuesday said that merely getting a degree will not take a person very far in the age of globalisation. “The purpose of education is not merely to get degree but to use it in a right direction,” she maintained.
Addressing students at the 30th Convocation of Ranchi University, she pointed out that self introspection by students will open many career options on the basis of education they get.
She also said that a student is free to opt for a job anywhere in the world after getting a degree, but it is better to remain connected and serve the society to which she/he belongs.
Stressing on the need of upgrading skills, she said, “Schemes like Digital India, Start-up India, Swachch Bharat Mission besides, other development projects must be taken up by the youths to promote growth and development of their respective areas. Innovations can serve diverse purposes. As youth’s contribution is mandatory in nation building, a student must think, decide and go ahead. It is important to develop curiosity and passion to attain knowledge. Students must develop imaginative temperament to enhance their skills.”
Governor Droupadi Murmu presided over the degree day function. Vidhan Sabha Speaker Dinesh Oraon and HRD Minister Neera Yadav were also present among others.
Murmu, on the occasion, said that all graduating students must get ready to face the challenges and dedicate themselves in nation building.
“As students are on the threshold of a new life, they have to cross several challenges. An individual must be prepared to take them into stride. Students must take social initiatives and work for the upliftment of downtrodden for overall inclusive growth and development,” added Murmu. She also laid emphasis on social work which can bridge the existing gap between the rich and the poor.
Dinesh Oraon maintained that the entire education system of the State can be boosted with sincere efforts.
The HRD Minister emphasized on imparting quality education among the youths to stop migration and brain drain. “To promote quality education among the students and to stop brain drain, the State government is putting up constant efforts. The department has sanctioned funds for different purposes like upgradation of labs, libraries and establishment of research centres. The projects will be completed within a stipulated period,” Yadav said.
