In a major fire mishap, six persons of a family were burnt due to leakage of lPG cylinder at Islam Nagar under Kapali near Mango on Tuesday morning.
Sources informed that the incident took place when one of the victims was trying to replace an empty cylinder with a filled one in the kitchen. The leakage triggered the fire.
As a result of the lPG fire, the house too caught fire, causing five others to sustain burns. Two of the victims escaped with minor burns, four others, including two children sustained serious burns.
The victims were rushed to Tata Main Hospital. Those who have been admitted to the TMH's burn care unit were identified as Sultana Parveen, Mohammed Dilzan, Mohammed Afam and Mohammed Miraz.
Sources further informed that the condition of Sultana Parveen and Mohammed Afam is said to be critical as they have sustained serious burns.
According to a relative, in the morning Sultana was replacing the empty cylinder with a filled one as the cylinder ran out of gas in the middle of the cooking. All of a
sudden there was a major leakage from the new cylinder, and before Sultana could think of any way out, the kitchen room had caught fire.
An official of Kapali Thana Out Post (TOP) said that four burn victims have been admitted to the hospital's burn care unit but they are yet to take the statement of the victims.
"The victims are not in a condition to give statement as they have sustained severe burns. We will take the statement only when they recover from the injury," official said.
A police team, led by officer-in-charge, rushed to the spot of the mishap after about an hour and cordoned off the house. The official claimed it to be a mishap but said that they were yet to ascertain the exact cause of the fire.
"As per our initial reports from the scene of the fire mishap it appears that the incident took place during replacement of a lPG cylinder. But, we are yet to find out how the fire was ignited," he said.
According to police, there must be some defect in the valve of the lPG cylinder and at the same time there must be some source of fire around.
