Police on Wednesday night lathi charged members of puja committee and local residents for their alleged delaying tactics in immersion of idols by Bata more Jharia puja committee members.
Both sides have levelled allegations of hurling abuses first but police claims that when they tried to make people understand they started pelting stones on them thus we resorted to lathi charge to restore order.
Locals allege that we were preparing for the immersion but police unwarrantedly started abusing us and that ignited the entire incident .
It's worth mentioning that the priest who was hired by the committee for puja had sustained major injuries when was hit by a speeding coal laden truck on October 3. Locals allege that police hushed up the entire case and released both the trucks without filing any FIR. The puja committee was protesting the police action by keeping idols on the road so delayed immersion.
However, after the incident more police from neighbouring police stations were called in and police got the immersion done under its protection .
The situation is under control now said,DSP Sundri Abhishek Kumar who had reached the spot after the incident.
When asked about people's demand action on truck drivers, the DSP said, "I have been informed that the truck was loaded with vegetables and there was no restriction on movement of essential goods loaded trucks. Even though an inquiry would be done after puja immersion is over and action would be taken accordingly."
