Latehar, Garhwa police do outreach for Maoists’ surrender

Kudrum, Myle and Briyatu Jageer villages are no longer naxals’ hot spots. These villages are the meeting places of the police with the families of the naxals.

The meeting takes place in an atmosphere of trust and cordiality where the parents of the naxals are motivated to ask their boys to return to mainstream of life. This is done not in a threatening tone but with care and caution.

This contact drive with families of naxals was first launched by SP Latehar Parshant Anand, who pushed off for two villages Bariyatu Jageer and Myle last week only.

Anand said Pradip Singh Chero, a hardcore Maoist, hails from Bariyatu Jageer village where he and his team went and met his parents.

He said Upender Singh Chero father of this Maoist is a high blood pressure patient with acute diabetes.  Maoist’s mother Priyanka Devi is a TB patient. Anand said, “Our team took them to government hospital in Latehar where both were examined and given medicines. Priyanka Devi was given anti TB drugs while Upender got BP and sugar control drugs.”

Anand’s second stopover was at village Myle from where is a Maoist Chandan.

Here Anand said our team asked Chandan’s parents to convince their son to lay down arms.  “It is a humanitarian operation no any surgical one,” SP Latehar reiterated. “At both the places the parents reposed great faith in us,” he added.

Back in Garhwa district SP Shivani Tiwary enacted the same contact drive.

On Tuesday she and her ASP (Ops) Sadan Kumar reached Kudrum village under Ranka police station and met the parents of Pankaj Korwa a Maoist who is operative in Burha Pahar and moves in the dasta of Mirtunjay.

Shivani Tiwary said today such a visit gives us a glimpse of the life of parents of Maoists as here in this Korwa case parents of Pankaj Maoist live a life of utter deprivation and stark poverty and just hold some land where the whole family draws sustenance while Pankaj Korwa moves around Burha Pahar and is too active with gun and powder.

On being asked as to what purpose this kind of visits to houses of Maoists’ serve she said, “It serves a lot. A bond is established. It helps dispel fear and apprehensions of families of Maoists who live with many nightmares like police will torture them, take them away etc.”

She further said these families after our visit begin to hold a different picture of police and that helps them to get more mentally tough and ready to come to terms with life.

At this Korwa house at Kudrum the parents said, “Our son Pankaj has not met us for over a very long time.

He is understood to have married also. The parents promised to convince Pankaj to come to law’’ recalled SP Garhwa.

A source said, “Such visits which are plain and without the façade of police awe have created great flutter in the Maoists’ camps too as the Maoists have this mortal fear that their cadres are sitting on the fence and no one knows which side these cadres will jump.”

This source said this has created tremendous psychological pressure on the Maoists leaders to keep their flock together in a situation like this where love and sympathy by police for families of naxals are winning them their (read families) hearts.
