lady cops on two-wheelers to be on night patrol

Published on:

Night patrolling in Ranchi will soon be seen through lady cops driving scooty. The idea was mooted at a discussion between Jharkhand State Commission for Women (JSCW) and Police on Tuesday relating to night safety measures for women in the State capital.

“We have enough lady constables capable of riding two wheelers but need the support of corporate houses and NGOs for availing scooty in this patrolling matter. It is not within our limits. In lucknow, this scooty patrolling is already going on,” said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Saket Kumar Singh.

JSWC Chairperson Mahua Maji said, “We are ready to approach TATA and Jindal industries through their corporate social responsibility efforts for this scooty allotment in writing.” The meeting called by JSWC chairperson Mahua Maji was attended by SSP, City SP Chothe Manoj Ratna, Traffic SP Rajiv Ranjan Singh and JSCW member Shabnam Pravin.

Maji said that the scooty cops will be followed by male cops who are already busy patrolling the city in motorcycles especially between 6 to 11pm. Adding more, the SSP said, “We will think about the name of this idea later but would like to launch it as soon as possible. Funding for this concept is a problem on level. More than lakhs is to be spent for this initiative.” The number of Shakti Mobile vans launched by Ranchi Police to keep an eye on crime against women early this year will be increased to three within a week.

Notably, the pink auto project exclusively sanctioned for women early this year has not been implemented yet due to district administration’s lack of initiative. Traffic SP has requested interested women who seek to drive these autos to submit an application to him directly so that the project can soon come on road. Ranchi Police had given a proposal to the state Government on installation of CCTV cameras across the city and proper lighting about 8-9 months ago. “Unfortunately, the state government has not shown interest to our proposal. We request JSWC to also send a proposal on the same request.”

Maji assured to re-send this proposal on her part at the earliest. Once the mentioned decisions are implemented in Ranchi, Maji is mulling to establish the same in districts like Jamshedpur and Dhanbad. After being appointed as the new chairperson of this commission this was Maji’s first meeting with police officers. “I aim to do a review meeting on the status of discussions done,” said Maji.
