labour crisis poses hurdle in RMC's monsoon drive

Published on:

With the onset of monsoon, ward councillors are managing the cleanliness task with limited labourers, even after the availability of all mandatory cleaning equipment and chemicals used to control water-borne diseases are available with the civic body in abundance.

“We have got few labourers from the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) and the entire ward is being managed. looking at the present condition, we require few more labourers to cover maximum area regularly.

However, we have been assured that special labourers will be deputed soon to carry out bleaching, fogging and for collection of wastes. But so far it has been difficult to maintain ward with just 20 labourers. Mere bleaching will not suffice to address the problem of people in monsoon,” Roshni Khalkho, Ward Councilor of Ward 21, said.

Ward Councilor of Ward 30, Om Prakash, said, “Drainage cleanliness and splashing bleaching powder is being carried out. Nevertheless, out of order rickshaws meant for garbage picking and limited workers are major hurdles at present.

The situation is such that even due to the lack of proper garbage pickers, several times garbage is piled up at places for a day or even more. This may have hazardous impact on people health residing around during monsoon.”

Civic body at present cannot deploy extra labourers, until the new company, Essel Infra takes the charge. Still, considering the status and slow pace of cleanliness work, the municipal corporation has deputed special fogging personnel to carry out the task phase wise in all the 55 wards.

“We have limited number of equipments available and we have to manage every nook of the city. At present, only 11 fogging machines are there and can only be utilised, when it is not raining. Besides this, ward supervisors have been given bleaching powder and other stuffs. As far as, garbage picking is concerned, this will be regularised only after the Essel Infra takes the charge from September 2016.

So far, we have to manage the cleanliness drive with limited workforce only as we are helpless,” Deputy Mayor, Sanjeev Vijaywargia, said.
