Admissions in constituent and affiliated colleges of Kolhan University have started taking place on the Chancellor Portal- www.jharkhanduniversities.nic.in. From now, colleges have no say in selecting meritorious students who have scored better in his/her intermediate exam. The application process has already begun from last week.
Though previously colleges used to announce cut off. Better ranked colleges had a higher cut off for admission in honours courses. However, now the minimum criteria of seeking admission in honours is 45 per cent and colleges will have to adhere to whatever list is sent by the Chancellor Portal authorities.
"The process has changed now. The colleges cannot announce cut offs unlike earlier because we aren't deciding whom to take. We will have to follow it," said an official of Karim City College.
Usually cut offs in Karim City College ranged between 60 per cent and 70 per cent in earlier years. The college have also taken direct admission of students from CISCE and CBSE board as their percentage was always higher than state board students unlike this year.
Although science is preferred by many students, commerce too is not far as students have understood the scope of the subject now. As many students want to pursue MBA after graduation, commerce also is preferred by most of the students. Among Arts, English, Political Science and Economics remain the best. Karim City College, another city-based premier college, has number of professional courses in store like Mass Communication and Video Production, Informational Technology, Computer Application etc.
“Yes we are receiving number of queries from students who are keen to take admissions in vocation courses. There is a common perception among students that conventional courses cannot land them a job immediately. This has also led to a rush in the vocational field,” said a professor.
Expressing similar opinions Minakshi Das, a student of Jamshedpur Women’s College, said, “These are the times when wrong planning can spoil your career. We should know the details and the scope of the course we plan to join. I am of the opinion that traditional courses like BA and MA do not help in getting jobs while professional and technical courses provide a lot of avenues”.
Jamshedpur Women’s College offers about 11 vocational courses ranging including BSC (IT), BCA, and several add one course like Banking, Web Designing, etc. The best part of these courses is that students get Bachelor’s degree after completion.
