With the objective to promote fitness and discipline among college students, Kolhan University has been selected to start National Cadet Corps (NCC), as an elective course in its colleges. In the first phase, the course will be launched in Jamshedpur Women’s College from 2013-14. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sanctioned introduction of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) training course as an elective subject in 30 universities across the country.
The Union HRD had organised a workshop to introduce NCC as an elective subject in New Delhi on March 12. It was attended by Salil Kumar Roy, VC, Kolhan University .
Roy said the aim of offering NCC as an elective subject is not only to instill a spirit of patriotism among the students but also to build character and moral values, which are relevant in society today.
“The idea is to promote discipline and fitness among the students and also promote them to carve their career in the field of defence. It will help more students to get familiarised with the NCC and create a larger base of cadets,” said a university official.
Sources went on to inform that the NCC had sent the proposal in this regard to the HRD ministry. The UGC has now decided to start the course on a pilot basis. The NCC has forwarded a similar proposal to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which is under consideration.
The NCC has also revised its syllabus and introduced personality development, communication skills and other courses to help cadets get more practical knowledge.
“like students chooses political science, chemistry and economics, this too would be same with credit points. It should not viewed as a military subject. I think, all these helps grooming the youths in a positive manner,” noted R K Choudhary a senior functionary of NCC.
