Koderma denizens celebrate Holi with fervour, gaiety

The Streets of Koderma ruled by colours on Friday as people of all age groups celebrated Holi across the district and joined the revelry applying ‘gulal’ on each other, gorging on sweets and singing and dancing to songs and drum beats.

People embraced each other wishing ‘Happy Holi’ as unseen hands squirted them with a well-timed coloured water spray.

The water-filled balloons were lobbed from rooftops and balconies as cries of ‘Holi Hai’ reverberated the streets.

The festival which heralds the advent of spring, is celebrated to commemorate the Hindu mythological tale of Prahlada emerging unscathed from the flames despite being drawn into the fire by demoness Holika.

The celebrations in Mica city was mostly peaceful, the festival of colours was celebrated with traditional zeal and zest.

The Hindu month of ‘Phagun’ ended on Thursday with ‘Holika Dahan’ and ‘Chaita’ starting on Friday.

Holika Dahan is observed by burning Holika, the devil of the past year. Fire burnt on the eve of ‘Holika Dahan’ symbolises the burning of Holika.

The story as a whole is testament to the power of devotion (bhakta) over the evil represented by King Hiranyakashyapu, as Prahlad never lost his faith.

Kodarma police had made elaborate arrangements to ensure a safe Holi.
