On the very first day of ‘Three-day workshop on Orthopedics and Trauma’, Professor Rajesh Malhotra, Head of Department (Orthopedics), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, performed a knee replacement surgery at Central Hospital Gandhi Nagar, Ranchi.
During his visit, Professor Malhotra also had a small conversation on knee-replacement and other bone-related diseases. He said that knee replacement should only be performed when there is unbearable knee pain or it hampers the day to day activity, thus affecting his/her ‘Quality of life’. Professor Malhotra, on the increasing rate of knee replacement said that sedentary lifestyle, obesity, and the rising life-expectancy, awareness, and affordability is the reason behind this trend. Professor Rajesh Malhotra also added that an average life of any knee implant is 12 to 15 years. However, knee replacement for 45-year-old will not be as meaningful as that of a 60 year-old because life of knee replacement is same for all. So at a young age, knee replacement should be avoided and taken up as the last option.
On the rising cases of Arthritis, especially among the women, he said that daily household chores, thyroid related problem, weight gain after pregnancy and menopause, changing lifestyle and sometimes because of hereditary reasons, women are mostly affected.
