Kitchen garden is to be promoted in Palamu. A drive is on. The district administration has roped in scientists of Krishi Vigyan Kendra to interact and interface with the personnel of the aaganvadi kendras to take down this campaign of kitchen gardens in every rural household.

Sources said DC Palamu Shashi Ranjan has asked the social welfare office here to generate impetus for the kitchen garden.

A senior scientist of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra Rajiv Kumar said the concept of kitchen garden is no novel thing as one knows and sees ‘baree’ near the houses in villages where households grow things of their need like garlic, ginger, onion, green chili, coriander, kaddu, leafy vegetables.

Kumar said in time like this a pandemic kitchen garden holds its own importance. Papaya can be grown in a corner of any house as is fruit and leaves both are of great medicinal value. Amla is another fruit that gives a fight to Covid 19 and this gooseberry (Amla) can be grown in the kitchen garden.

“ Today it is a fashion to have fast food or to have food in a ready to eat position little knowing the harms coming with it,” said this Sr scientist.

What if there is not much space behind the kitchen for the veggies garden to grow, Kumar said one can go for pot culture growing of vegetables.

Tomatoes are raised conveniently in pot culture growing vegetables.

The motto of the kitchen garden is not to make available soil fresh veggies but to add supplement to nutrition to overcome malnutrition.
