Kissing row rocks House, BJP wants debate

In a role reversal, the ruling BJP members disrupted the Question Hour in the House cornering the JMM over the kissing competition held in Pakur for tribal couples in the presence of the two JMM legislators Stephen Marandi and Simon Marandi.

BJP legislators Ram Kumar Pahan and Viranchi Narayan termed the event, organised reportedly by a JMM member four days ago, as going against the culture and custom of the tribals and flashed posters against it.

BJP's chief whip Radha Krishna Kishore went on describing the incident as disrespect to women. "This has brought disrepute to the entire women community. The JMM leader has said that this has been the part of tribal culture which is untrue. The matter should be brought for discussion before the House," said Kishore.

Repeated attempts from Speaker Dinesh Oraon to pacify the members and start the Question Hour went in vain when defensive looking JMM members took a chance and raised the issues on domicile policy and the bill amending a portion of the land Acquisition Act.

Also, the Speaker's  rejection of  four adjournment motions moved by Amit Mahto, Jagarnath Mahto and Deepak Birua of the JMM for relooking the policies and the bills already passed and JVM's Pradeep Yadav demanding discussion over land allotted at Godda to Adani Power added fuel to the Opposition's fire.

The leader of Opposition Hemant Soren accused  the Government of doing brokerage of land for a corporate house. "The Government has started playing a middleman for companies. Now even the Chair is not allowing these issues being raised and discussed here then where the aggrieved members should goIJ This is not loktantara but lathitanra," said the former Chief Minister.

Speaker Dinesh Oraon, ruling out the adjournment motions, said that since the legislations relating to the said subjects has been discussed and cleared by the Assembly and some have even got assent of the Governor, there is not point allowing these to be discussed here again.

However, Yadav contested this claiming that the power major at Godda has acquired land forcefully and through illegitimate help coming from the local Administration and said his motion is in the public interest.looking no respite coming, the JMM members trooped into the Well and resorted to sloganeering. The stalemate continued for over half an hour forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House till 12.30 pm.

The pandemonium continued outside also hinting that no constructive use of the Winter Session is going to take place in the days to come. "Government does not want to run the House. The BJP members are bringing those issues which are not related to the Assembly. It means clearly that they want disruption," said Pradeep Yadav. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Saryu Roy hit out at the Opposition for raising irrelevant issues through adjournment motions "which are not of immediate public interest and, in fact, are the bills already passed."
