Kin seek CBI probe into medical aspirant's death

Questioning credibility of the postmortem report issued by the medical board which indicates that Icchita Singh committed suicide in her hostel room, her family members demanded a CBI inquiry into the case.

Talking to media persons at Firayalal Chowk here  on Tuesday, Ichhtia’s father also alleged that Goal Institute management in connivance with the local police was trying to divert this murder case into a suicide case by removing all evidences related to it.

“It is a clear cut murder case, but the police and the Institute Management are trying to misguide everyone calling it a case of suicide. As we are not convinced with the investigations conducted so far and lost faith in the local police, we demand a CBI inquiry into the case so that justice could be done with my daughter,” said Icchita’s father Sanjay Singh. He warned that his whole family will immolate at Firayalal Chowk if the case was not handed over the CBI.

When asked what made him doubt over the investigations done by Ranchi Police, Singh said that there were several things which raise doubts over the whole story told by Goal Institute officials – Prince Kumar and Kamrendra Kumar, who took Icchita to hospital after the incident.

“Firstly, in the CCTV footage it is clearly visible that the girl was being taken to the hospital at 9:12 pm then how come they got death certificate at 9:10 pm. It means they managed to get the death certificate much earlier even before the body was brought to the hospital,” said the father.  Secondly, despite the fact that hostel warden remains in the hostel round the clock, she was not present there at the time of the incident, he added.

“If she was alive when they found her hanging from the ceiling fan, why they took her to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, rather than taking her to the nearest Orchid Hospital,” Singh added. Moreover, there was no mention of the injury marks on her neck and shoulder which are quite evident even in the photograph taken after her death which raises doubts over the autopsy report prepared by the medical board, Ichhita’s father said.

“How come the ‘O’ shape, found during the primary investigations by the doctors immediately after the incident, changed into ‘V’ shape in the postmortem report,” said Singh.

Referring to Ichhtia’s relationship with her school time friend Manish Agrawal, her sister Swarnim Singh said that police was trying to misguide them by giving a different angle to it.

“We do not want character certificate from the police, we want proof of her suicide, which they have failed to produce before us so far,” said the sister. “It is very unfortunate that whenever such incidents happen with a girl, police starts questioning her character to hide their shortcomings,” she said.

The family also urged all the girl students in Jharkhand to observe ‘black day’ on ‘International Women’s Day’ against the alleged murder of Icchita. Some of the student organisations are also planning to organise a rally from Women’s College to Firayalal Chowk.

Police, however, reiterated that it was clear in the investigations that it was a suicide case. “It is clear in the investigations that no one killed her. Now the challenge before us is to find out what were the reasons behind taking her such a harsh step,” said City DSP Shambu Kumar Singh.
