Appreciating the efforts of the ophthalmologists of State’s biggest hospital and medical college — Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) for successfully carrying out the cornea transplantation surgery, Principal Secretary, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Nidhi Khare congratulated the entire medical fraternity of RIMS for achieving this major success. During her visit to RIMS on Saturday, the Secretary interacted with the surgeons as well as the patients.
“RIMS, in yet another breakthrough, has done a commendable job and has created history by carrying out cornea transplantation successfully. This is a landmark achievement in the hospital’s history. This will not just boost the morale of the hospital administration but will also be immensely useful for those who have to go out and expend huge amount in cornea transplantation,” said Khare during the interaction.
Notably, RIMS for the first time has done cornea transplantation and has successfully accomplished the transplantation without any hassle. The doctors’ team was guided by Dr. Rahul Prasad and Dr. Sunil Kumar. According to the medical bulletin released by the hospital administration after the surgery, both Nerulla (17) and Nisha (16) who had undergone surgery are responding well. The patients have lost their eye sights at a tender age, the medical bulletin suggested.
As per the reports, the hospital administration was attempting hard since long to start cornea transplantation at this government hospital, which annually witnesses quite a number of patients from the State as well as from the adjoining regions coming here with different eye related problems.
On September 14, after receiving the consent from the family member of a deceased, the doctors of RIMS without much delay carried out the cornea transplantation surgery. Within a few hours of the operation, the patients were shifted to the general ward and were under observation of Dr. VV Sinha, Head of the Department (HoD), Eye Department.
The cornea transplantation operation was done free of cost. In normal circumstances, a patient’s family has to pay up to Rs. 10,000 for cornea transplantation at any private hospital. Both RIMS (Director) — Dr. RK Srivastava and RIMS (Superintendent) — Dr Vivek Kashyap have expressed their contentment over this achievement and have assured better medical facilities to the patients in the coming days.
