Khadi Board launches jute bags

Joining hands to bring a change while imparting the message of ‘Go Green’, Jharkhand State Khadi and Village Industries Board on Friday launched ‘Khadi Jhola’ (Carry Bags) to bridge the demand and supply gap that has emerged after the decision on banning polythene. Also, this eco-friendly initiative has been adopted to link several Self –Help Groups (SHGs) with some constructive trade that will eventually aid the SHGs to boost a descent revenue, said Sanjay Seth, Khadi Board Chairperson.

Meanwhile, with the end of the deadline set for the shopkeepers, retailers and small merchants to get rid of hazardous polythene by November 15, the enforcement team of Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has begun to raid the defaulters and penalize them.

The enforcement team on the first day had collected Rs. 8000 from the defaulters while on Friday imposed Rs 2000 fine on the defaulters.

“On the second day, we conducted a checking drive at Ashok Nagar, Hinoo. During the drive, most of the shops at these locations adhered to the guidelines. However, the enforcement team collected Rs. 2000 from different shopkeepers for violating the rules,” said City Manager, Sandeep Kumar, who is heading the Municipal Corporation’s Swacch Bharat Mission (SBM) team.

After cracking the whip on quite a number of defaulters, RMC City Managers have opined that the attempts are being made to instill the practice of using jute bag among the sellers and consumers; however it may take some time.

“On the first day, we targeted a few prominent spots. local markets too are on the radars as bulk polythene is used by the sellers and customers there. The team on per day basis selects a specific zone. Our drive against polythene is not merely restricted to penalizing the defaulters but also involves creating awareness about the same,” said another RMC City Manager, Swati Raj.
