If the city residents adopt the healthy practice of disposing of the biodegradable wastes at a designated place marked on the bank of Kanke dam, the purpose of ‘Swacch Bharat’ mission will be fulfilled to an extent. With the purpose to promote cleanliness, an eco- friendly approach is adopted to keep the water body clean.
The PHED department has taken an initiative to promote cleanliness among denizens and have constructed a small pit with boulders on the bank of Kanke dam, one of the most prominent recreational places. Starting with one pit to dump the biodegradable wastes, the Department plans to construct more such pits to maintain hygiene near the water reservoir.
“located in the heart of the city Kanke dam witnesses huge footfall, especially during festivals and weekends. looking at the amount of litter collected from the bank site at a regular interval, the Department has constructed a boulders pit, where the denizens are supposed to dump garbage to keep the water body clean. The idea has been generated with the purpose to keep the water save, as it is supplied in various households,” said, PHED Engineer of Gonda Division, Rajesh Rai.
Notably, from the environment perspective too it is mandatory to adopt such concept, as people often leave the waste and other stuffs on bank side which pollutes the water body. The Department is ensuring to free Kanke Dam from watercress and other free-floating aquatic plants too ahead of the festival season. The step will infuse a fresh lease of life into the lake.
“As located in the heart of the city, it is one of the most preferable tourist destinations. But it is often seen due to the lack of civic sense among people, tons of garbage is collected every year. Stairs have been constructed for the occasion of Chhath Puja. The Department will adopt other preventive measures in more elaborate way and more pits are likely to be constructed around the bank,” added, Rai.
“People should also act responsibly and desist from littering around the lake. The step is also to beautify the lake. The department will collect the garbage at regular gaps. The boulders pit have been constructed after checking safety measures and is not affecting the course of water,” added Rai.
