The residents of Kadma staged gherao of the police station demanding the arrest of one Rekha Devi for running a job racket and duping the candidates of Rs 1.5 crore.

Shocked by the incident the victims of the fraud demanded the arrest of Rekha, who has fled her home, having duped the people by promising money-minting schemes and providing jobs in Tata Steel as well as in the Railway.

In this connection, the police registered a case against Rekha Devi and her husband Yashant Rai, both residents of Ramjanam Nagar in Kadma on Saturday. The FIR was registered on the basis of statement given by one of the investors, who has been duped of Rs 3 lakh.

The gherao was lifted after superintendent of police (city) Karthik S assured the protestors over his cell-phone that the police would arrest the culprit woman.

According to the investors, after Seema Devi had lodged the FIR, the accused Rekha Devi had assured the agitated investors to return their money by Sunday morning, but on Sunday the woman fled her home along with her husband instead of returning the money.

“She fooled us by starting 'chit-fund' two years ago and as her business started growing she started switching over to other racket like providing jobs in railways and Tata Steel,” said a victim.

In the name of providing jobs, the accused woman had charged as high as Rs 4 lakhs from the people.

Seema Devi said that whenever she visited the house of the accused for asking her money back, she saw a youth, named Umesh Singh, son of a police officer.

“The accused and her husband would also threaten me of dire consequences if I sought for the invested money, and while threatening us, she would say that she has good connection with some influential police officials,” Seema Devi said.

She stated that she has even mentioned this all in the FIR which she lodged on Saturday. After the gherao was lifted police seemed to have started raiding the place of Rekha Devi in the afternoon.

Officer-in-charge, Kadma police station, Jaiprakash Rana said confirmed that a woman, Rekha Devi has duped over Rs 1 crores from about 100 people in various form. He said that her husband Yashwant Rai has also fled his house, but the police would continue to make efforts for the arrest of both Rekha Devi and Yashwant Rai.
