Students wore new khadi gowns in cream, red and blue. It has been designed by students of National Institute of Fashion Technology, Delhi. Ninety-eight toppers were felicitated with gold medals.

Principal Purnima Kumar said they had a dream to re-introduce khadi. “Degree holders in a black gown and cape are an enduring symbol of academic success, especially for girls. That’s been a symbol of emancipation for many women through the generations. That’s why we have kept the cape with gown, though the fabric and colours are different,” said Kumar.

Last year, Kolhan University broke the tradition of the quintessential black gown and cape and instead used traditional outfits accompanied by Jaipuri pagdis and Santhali stoles.

Students should focus on research work and acquiring degree should not be the only aim of academic life. Jharkhand Governor cum chancellor of universities, Droupadi Murmu said this during second Graduation Day of Jamshedpur Women’s College (JWC) .

Altogether 98 students got gold medal while altogether 4003 graduate (2013 and 2014 pass out) and post graduate (2014 and 2015 pass out) got certificate on the occasion. Students, wearing fusion of Indo-western designed Khadi gown and hat, received medal from the governor.

The autonomous college had adopted the new gown for the first time as students had been demanding to ban over the British period black gown on an auspicious occasion of their academic life. The college administration adopted Khadi gown, spreading the patriotic feeling and Kolhan University is likely to follow it in it’s upcoming convocation.

Addressing to the students, governor said that teachers should act as mother while teaching student in colleges. They should prove inner skill and try to achieve excellence in each respective field, she added.

“Sky should be limit for each student in academic and post academic life. They should try to be role model in the society. Girl student should come up with examples that orthodox people should get change their approach towards women”, Murmu said.
