Jharkhand State Commission for Women (JSCW) has come forward for ensuring the security of fairer sex in the educational institutions after a day of the shameful incident at the women’s college — where a girl and two of her friends were thrashed — by Ranchi Women’s college and Adivasi boy’s hostellers.
JSCW Chairperson Mahua Majhi met with the Ranchi Women College Principal Dr Manju Sinha on Wednesday to discuss the incidents and to find out a concrete solution for the burning problem in long run.
Showing her deep concern over the cracks in security at college campus Majhi said, “I have asked the college authority to leave no stone unturned in ensuring the security of the students. All the colleges should make identity cards obligatory for entry within the premises. Moreover, the colleges must have atleast two security guards at all the entry gates.”
Interestingly, conflict arose between the college authority and the administration regarding security of women. To put a break on the alarming incidents college authority has pleaded the city police to deploy some officials in civil uniform outside the premises. Ironically, the proposal was turned down on the ground of lack of resources available in the department.
City DSP PN Singh who was also present in the meeting said, “It is not possible for the administration to deploy officials outside the college premises. However, we ensure to extend our all possible help in this direction. All the three shakti vahan will be patrolling the college areas. Moreover, on a call on the helpline number 100 the police administration will come for the rescue of the compliant.”
Meanwhile, the college Principal Dr Manju Sinha has assured that such incidents would not take place in future and for this the college administration has tightened their belt. “The gape in the wall that divides the women hostel and adivasi hostel will be filled by tomorrow. Moreover, a visitor room will be made at the hostel gate and a time will be fixed for the family members for meeting their wards.”
She further added that the number of security guards will also be increased. On the reply of the city DSP regarding the help asked by the college authority she added, “It is the responsibility of the college to provide their students complete security. We have kept our proposal in front of the administration now the ball is in their court.”
However, the security guards of other colleges feel that the rules after a certain point of time it would not be followed at a breach in all the colleges. “The orders are carried out for some time and once the matter cools down all the colleges resume their previous practice,” said a security guard of Gossoner College.
Many college authorities feel that their responsibility gets over after instructing the guards. The St. Xaviers College Vice-Principal Nabor lakra was contacted, he said, “I have asked the security guards to leave no stone unturned in ensuring the security of the students. If they do not follow the instruction then I am not liable for presenting an answer for it. Its better you ask the guards regarding this.”
