Jharkhand police’s GIS wins accolades in MHA’s tech meet

Jharkhand police’s Global Information System (GIS) is winning accolades at the Police Technology Exhibition organized by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) at Kevadiya town in Gujarat. The technology – used extensively in anti-Maoist operations and monitoring of elections here – has become the eye-catcher for visitors from 12 states and nine enforcement agencies, police said on Wednesday.

“I strongly believe that technology always multiplies the force in a police organization. Jharkhand is one of the 12 states showcasing its police technology at the exhibition and is winning appreciation from different corners of the country,” said Director General of Police Kamal Nayan Choubey.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the exhibition on October 31 in Gujarat. The objective behind organising the exhibition is to showcase the technological achievements of different police forces and how the police are using Information Technology in combating crime. The weeklong exhibition is scheduled to conclude on November 6.

GIS is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of geographical data. This data can be used in surveillance of specific geographical locations and take necessary steps to prevent crimes or catch hold of offenders.

The GIS designed by Jharkhand police is also used in Emergency Response System and Shakti App –a mobile App for ensuring safety of women. In 2016, Chief Minister Raghubar Das launched Jharkhand’s first women safety android application Shakti App.  Through the android app, women who sense trouble and need of protection can register complaints to the nearest police patrolling.

The CM also flagged off 18 Police Control Room (PCR) vans especially for ensuring safety of women in the State capital. The GIS assists police forces in locating and intercepting Left Wing Extremist outfits in the State during combing operations, police said.

Besides the GIS, Jharkhand police has also developed a Private Cloud Data System with a pool of 20 to 22 computers. This cloud can work for 400 servers at a time.

Jharkhand police are also working on developing mobile apps for maintaining law and order in urban areas of the State. Ranchi police are working on a smart phone App that will help avert burglaries and thefts in the city by sending updates to the nearest police station whenever occupants leave a house vacant, even for a day.

Besides, the traffic police here have recommended an App-based bus service in Ranchi. The App will send a pop up message to the nearest police station that a particular family, staying in a particular house number, will be out of station.

A cop will be assigned duty of maintaining a vigil around house and prevent cases of theft, said a senior police official. A group of young, tech-savvy officers in Ranchi police are designing App.
