Jharkhand needs to develop tribal archaeology: Burdhan

Secretary of Museum Association of India Anand Burdhan has underlined the need to develop the tribal archaeology of the State. According to him, the Art and Culture of Jharkhand has not been highlighted sufficient enough at the national level in spite of having immense opportunities for historical studies.

“There are archaeological attractions in this State which are both of international and national importance. This includes areas in Itkhori block of Chatra district, Tanginath in Gumla and Maluti in Dumka. Temples and Forts of Palamau and Saraikela are also included in this heritage value,” said Burdhan on Saturday.

While emphasising on the archaeological aspect of this state, he said “Forts in the forests of this region are best examples of classical culture and the tourism department here must work on developing the cultural landscape. Involving the local people for developing these forts as tourism spots would play a significant role.”

Museum Association of India has decided to organise a national seminar in November this year on ‘Community Heritage and Museum’ for spreading the Art and Culture awareness of Jharkhand across the nation.

Burdhan also described the ritual system of purifying temple and museum images. He said, “In the recent times, camphor wood box, steel box, neem boxes are used for preserving archaeological structures.”

Burdhan was speaking at the International Museum Day celebration in the state museum on Saturday. Director of Art, Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs department Ashok Kumar stressed on utilising the state museum as a tool for social change. “We ought to increase public awareness about the role of museums in connecting a person to their tradition,” said Kumar.

President of Museum Association of India PK Sharma, Ranchi University (RU) History department head IK Choudhury and State Museum Director M Sarfuddin along with students from RU were present during this occasion.
