Jharkhand megaliths set to unfold mystery

Published on:

Thousands of megaliths in villages of Jharkhand have similar pictures and scripts   found in the megaliths  in Switzerland, San Giorgio Di Susa, Val Camonica in Italy and Bessa. The similarities are startling because of the distance and time of their carving, which is about 3000 years, said experts here on Thursday.

During the megalithic research in the State in the recent times many startling facts have come out before the archeologists. An institution ‘Heritage Jharkhand’ has been doing research in the field and found several new facts in the recent days. The institution had found thousands of megaliths during its research near Bundu, Bisno dih and Pandrani villages in the year 2002.

On February 09, 2018, a team of experts, including Historian Dr HS Pandey, Archeaoogist Dr Harendra Sinha, Research Assistant Md Imran and local assistant Amar Koiri went to the sites and did extensive research on the megaliths. The team went there with the nod from chief patron of the institution and Tourism and Culture Minister Amar Kumar Bauri.

The Minister said that several important facts were discovered during the study, which can make Jharkhand a centre of attraction for archeologists across the world. Bauri and Dr Sinha convened a joint press conference here on Thursday and said that mainly four kinds of megaliths were found in the State – Dolmen, Cist, Menhirs and Campstone.

“During the research it was found that several designs have been carved on Campstones, which include birds, snakes, humans, small cup mark series etc. It is possible that the carvings are like a picture script like that of the Harappan civilization. Almost similar designs are found on megaliths found in western countries. Most surprisingly the western megaliths date back to 3000 BC, while the megaliths here are from the first century AD,” said Dr Harendra Sinha.

The experts said that similar designs of humans carved on megaliths in Maharashtra were found but not much research has been done there. “Experts from Scotland have shown much interest on the issues and efforts are being made to work jointly to find out the connection between the megaliths from Jharkhand and western countries and also as to how there is so much similarity between them despite such a huge distance,” said Dr Sinha.

They said that the Munda tribe of Jharkhand has some connection with the megaliths. “We are discussing with western experts and trying for a joint research either here or there so that the mystery can be unfolded. But one thing is certain that the mysteries surrounding megaliths across the globe would finally be solved in Jharkhand only, where the role of Munda tribe would be crucial,” said Bauri.
