Jamshedpur traffic cops have achieved a distinction of collecting maximum revenue collection despite catching less number of vehicles compared to neighbouring districts of Seraikela-Kharsawan and West Singhbhum.

According to information, during drives in past few months, the police have caught vehicles four times less than Seraikela-Kharsawan police and eight times less than Chaibasa police. However, in terms of collection of fines for offences related to it exceeds that of the two districts.

The number of traffic violation cases caught in Jamshedpur is 267 while cases in Seraikela-Kharsawan is 1124 and 2104 in Chaibasa.

A traffic official informed that in Jamshedpur traffic police have collected Rs 52,000 from 52 riders without helmets and Rs 31,500 from 63 riders without masks. In the process a total of Rs 83,500 has been collected for traffic violation.

“Considering the spread of Corona taking place the two-wheeler riders will have to wear helmets along with the pillion-rider. We are conducting a random helmet checking drive, and if found any pillion-rider without a helmet, then he or she will have to pay a penalty as per the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act," said an official.

Significantly, for helmetless riders the fine is Rs 1,000 while riding without a mask has a penalty of Rs 500.

“Our aim is not to charge fines and fill up state coffers but to drive home the virtues of safe riding and not putting self and other lives at risk on the roads. We are laying focus especially on riding without helmets,” said the official.

Concerned over the rising cases of road mishaps, the district traffic police embarked on a drive checking the helmets of riders and pillion-riders too and also ensure that the visor of the head-gears is clean and in good condition.
