Jails to come under 'third eye' by Aug 15

Chief Secretary Rajbala Verma has asked Home department officials to install Close Circuit TV (CCTV) cameras in all jails in State before August 15 this year. During review meeting of Jail (Home) department on Wednesday, she also directed them through video conferencing to provide training to cell in-charges of operation and functioning of such cameras. Moreover, all financial transactions of jail will be done through cashless route, directed the CS.

Verma asked police captains of districts to visit jails in their districts at least twice a month. She also directed them on Wednesday to register FIR against all those who were found with any objectionable material under their possession during such inspections, which would, according to her, ensure reduced number of criminal activities in districts.

Keeping safety, security and health issues of prisoners in mind, Verma asked officials to organise regular health check-ups of ill prisoners, apart from taking video conferencing route for hearing. “No prisoner should be taken out for any reason including hearing and district judges should be informed about hearing through video conferencing,” said the CS during meeting in which Additional CS (Home) SKG Rahate, IG (Jail) Suman Gupta, ADG (Special Branch) Anurag Gupta, SPs and Jailers of all the districts and other officials were present.

She asked officials to get kids above six years of age of female prisoners to be admitted in residential schools. Kids below six years of age should be provided basic education by educated prisoners itself, asked the CS.
