Fear has multiple meanings but it is imperative for all of us. There are times when fear is good. It must keep its watchful place at the heart's controls. In fact I learnt that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.
Freedom from fear sounds better than reality. We imagine that it would make us bolder and braver but in reality it would make us stupider. Fear as it turns out is the fundamental part of making good decisions. Science has shown that feeling fear- in the right dose- has several benefits. It is important for all of us to embrace that little fear or shiver that goes down our spine when we first venture into an alien arena. Believe me that fear is a good thing, and it should have a place in our life.
When you step outside your comfort zone, it is fear that makes you feel alive, which is fun and exciting. Be aware that the excitement generated can also alleviate depression by increasing adrenaline, which in turn increases exhilaration and glucose. Just as caffeine can put you in an optimal state of performance but too much can be detrimental and make you crash, a little bit of fear is a boost of adrenaline. It's nearly impossible to carry on everyday pressures and worries when you are experiencing extreme fear but still a small dose of fear is an eraser for the mind.
Fear actually leads you to live life to the fullest. You always have a choice. Either let the fear captivate you or face the fear head on and expand the possibilities and opportunities in your life.
Fear gives one clarity on what is really important in life. How often do we say ," When I have enough time, I'll follow my passion, eat healthier or exercise more.?" Fear actually makes you realise that time is running and that 'now' is the only time you have to achieve and follow through on what is the most important for 'later' is never guaranteed.
It is essential to remember that fear can be the birthplace of dramatic change, creativity and innovation. Thus we should all keep a little bit of fear as our constant companion. Not the big fears that are life-threatening but the helpful fears that come in pint sizes. A little fear enables us to transform into better, healthier and more empowered beings. So let fear be with you as a benediction.
