Intermittent rains won't help much: IMD

The ongoing spell of rains for the last two three days is not enough to improve the drought-like situation within the state. According to the forecast issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) office in Ranchi State will receive intermittent spells of rain during this period.

Director of Ranchi Met office G K Mohanty informed that there are rare chances of improving the drought like situation resulting in not much benefit to the farming sector. He said, “There will be no significant change in weather conditions in the next seven days. Scattered rainfall will continue in different areas of the state. To cover up the deficit it is important to have heavy and continuous rainfall but the situation appears grim.”

He further added, “The state capital received 1.5mm of rainfall as against the normal rainfall of 13.2mm. Jharkhand has received 405.4mm as against the normal rainfall of 579.6mm thereby denoting a shortfall of 29 per cent. This shower show may reduce the deficit by one to two per cent.”

The depression for the farmers still continues as this amount of rainfall is not sufficient for transplantation of crops. Only 50 per cent plantation of crop has been done till date. Chief Minister (CM) Hemant Soren announced on Monday that state is going through early drought situation and for this he declared a series of measure to help the state farmers. He has promised to provide a corpus fund of Rs two crore to each district and additional fund of Rs 14 crore for the arrangement of alternative farming in the state.

Principal Secretary of State Agriculture Department Dr Nitin Madan Kulkarni said, “Farming in Jharkhand is completely dependent on monsoon due to lack of irrigation facilities. As this year, state received inadequate amount of rain this has adversely affected farming across the state. With this amount of rainfall it is not possible to curb the loss of farmers.”

He further added, “To minimize the loss to some extent the farmers are provided Gulati and surguja seeds as they require comparatively less amount of water in its cultivation.”
