Inter results out, desultory for science

Published on:

Intermediate results have thrown up a mere 38.28 per cent success rate in the science stream, while arts and commerce students have fared better, with a success rate of 72.92 and 70.55 per cent, respectively.

As usual, girls outshone boys in both commerce and arts but tripped up in science. Pass percentage for boys in science was 38.42, compared to 37.83 for girls.

In commerce, 79.20 per cent girls came out with flying colours, compared to 66.45 per cent boys, while 74.89 per cent girls passed in arts, while boys’ pass percentage stood at 70.49 per cent.

Governor Syed Ahmed announced this year’s intermediate results at the Jharkhand Academic Council headquarters on Tuesday. He said, “For a particular subject, student must refer to at least 10 other books, instead of referring to three years’ board questionnaire at the eleventh hour. Tuition has affected studies. Moreover, parents should never ignore their offspring. This creates a void in the child’s mind.”

Showing concern for students performing poorly in science, JAC chairman Anand Bhushan said, “Every year, science results are a wake up call for us. There is a need to improve the education system.” Success rate for science students was 33.70 per cent in 2011 and 48.37 per cent in 2012.

“lack of infrastructure and irregular classes are a cause for worry. Students usually attend only 100 classes out of the 220 in an academic calendar,” he added. Bhushan maintained that in spite of introducing model question papers, overall results were not satisfactory. “It implies that students were unable to understand questions. In such case, evaluation of students is essential,” he noted.

PRD Secretary MR Meena, who holds additional charge of human resource development department, said, “Whether a student comes first, second or third, the board examination reflects efforts put in teachers and parents of the students.” To improve academic output, JAC opted for the model question paper format, held workshops for teachers and extra classes for weak students in session 2012-13. Students scoring second division are more in the number of passouts this time.

St Xavier’s College, Ranchi, churned out toppers in all three streams. The college, in fact, bagged top three positions for commerce students in Jharkhand. Principal of St Xavier’s Father Nicholas Tete said, “Credit goes to teachers and parents equally, besides the students, for this success. We will try to maintain the standard in the coming session as well.”

Similar to JAC matriculation results counselling this year, Bhushan declared launch of counselling for intermediate students as well, from 11 am on Wednesday. He himself will counsel in the initial two hours.
