The Assistant Sub Inspector of Barhet police station of Sahibganj district, Chandrika Rai Soren (51) took his last breath at a city based hospital in Ranchi during treatment on Saturday where he was admitted on June 27 after he sustained bullet injury following an encounter with criminals in Sahibganj.
He was part of the police team investigating the abduction of food grain trader Arun Kumar Sahu; a resident of Barmisia locality under Borio police station of Sahibganj district who was abducted by criminals on June 20 for ransom. Abductors had demanded Rs 30 lakh as ransom.
His wreath laying ceremony was held at JAP 1 ground in presence of Chief Minister Hemant Soren after which his body was taken to his native village Sandawana under Saraikela-Kharsawan district where his last rites will be performed with full state honours.
He joined the police force in 2015 as constable and rose to become assistant sub-inspector in 2018.
While officer in-charge of Barhet police station Harish Pathak and the deceased Soren were jointly investigating the abduction case of the trader they got intelligence inputs that abductors have taken shelter at a home at Dububathan village. Pathak also suffered minor injury after abductors hit on his head.
Moment police reached the village abductors opened fire on Police force.
Soren received a bullet on his stomach and was quickly rushed to Ranchi for better treatment.
However, abductors managed to escape after the encounter police seized pistols and bikes from the encounter site. Fearing that their identity has been exposed and they will be arrested by police sooner or later abductors killed Sahu and his body was recovered on June 28.
Investigation revealed that the abduction was planned and executed by a dreaded criminal Lakhiram who belongs to banned rebel outfit National Santhal Liberation Army. Police said that the accused who is a native of Assam was involved in the encounter with police.
While Lakhiram is yet to be arrested; Sahibganj police a week back had arrested a key member of the outfit Samuel Hansda who was involved in the abduction.
Police said it was Hansda who was making the ransom calls to the family of the deceased trader.
