India has 22 biodiversity hot spots, says Dr Yahya

The role of Indian biodiversity is very important in world’s context. There are 22 hot spots of biodiversity in our country. In India more than 16% species of algae are found which is the highest in the world. It was said by Dr HAS Yahya, HoD of Wildlife Department of AMU, in a program organised by Department of Botany of VBU on International Biodiversity Day.

We are fortunate that our country is rich in number of species of plants, animals and birds but it is a matter of concern for all of us that only 4% part of our total land has been declared conserved for this rich biodiversity. Dr Yahya said that the condition is deteriorating day by day and you can see pet animals roaming in conserved areas nowadays.

The other members of biodiversity are not dependent so much on us as we are dependent on them, so it is a matter of concern for us that the biodiversity is in danger and we will have to face the aftereffect in the days to come. lakhs of ACs were bought by us in last two decades which harms the natural habitat of many members of our biodiversity. It is said that the temperature is rising but the fact is that it has risen only 2 to 3 degree Celsius in last 500 years.
