In Search of Happiness

Have you known people who repeat often that they ‘are not feeling too good’ and for no particular reason. I have had relatives and friends, all around my age repeat the ‘I’m not feeling too good’ rant often. After having rounds of discussions with many of my peers, finally, I have come to this conclusion that most people around my age are not having enough fun to feel happy despite being in good health and having a loving and caring family.

The above situation is true for most of the middle aged individuals. The sole reason behind not being in a happy state is that most of us after crossing say 45 years of age seize to have fun in our own way and presume the word ‘fun’ is only for youngsters. We let life and responsibilities take over, deprive ourselves from indulging in fun activities for ourselves and often wonder why we suffer from fatigue, maybe even depression.

There are some great examples too. Like my friend– let’s call her Ms Banerjee. In her mid-fifties, single all her life, a school teacher and an avid reader. I always admire her life style and give credit to her innovative ideas to remain fit and happy. Every year, she celebrates her birthday in a unique way. She buys new clothes for herself, goes to temples for her own well being and prepares the traditional kheer for herself. She in fact loves herself.

Occasionally, I visit her home and find though she is single she maintains the proper decorum of an ideal family and treats herself so well. During lunch or dinner the dining table is properly laid down with proper table napkins and cutlery just for herself.

She is a pet lover and has a dog. Her morning starts with the joyride on her scooter with her pet. Being an avid reader, she always has books for company. Instead of confining herself in a corner of her home with her books she takes them to nearby coffee shop, parks or to a good safe nearby location.

According to Ms Banerjee –ageing doesn’t mean you need to have a boring life. You can make life enjoyable, as well as make time for fun in your own way, whatever be your circumstances. Recently she has started visiting not so famous temples and mosques around the city. She takes snaps of the structures, enquire about the history and importance of the place from the residents nearby. She writes small articles on her findings about these infamous places, and gathered a small following on social media for her adventures. I could see a little spark in her eyes when she showed me some positive comments on her photographs.

Her latest passion is that of a solo traveler. She is currently an extremely busy person, balancing her job and many interests. She is full of contentment and positivity reflects in her personality.

I am extremely impressed with this individual who knows the art of being happy and having fun, and I wanted to share this with anyone who might be feeling ‘not too good’ today. All we need is to give our own selves some importance, do some soul searching and explore the best way of living our life. Happiness is within us, it’s a choice we make and age should not come in the way of our pursuit of fun and happiness.
