Improving PDS a big challenge: Saryu Roy

Published on:

Food Distribution and Civil Supplies Minister Saryu Roy has said that Jharkhand needs to imitate Chhattisgarh on PDS if the State wanted to take benefits to the masses. The Minister was in Chhattisgarh on Thursday where he also visited some PDS shops, godowns and met Departmental Minister and officials.

“Chhattisgarh has set up far better system for food security which was there before 2013 when the Act for this came. Women SHGs, panchayati raj system and cooperatives have contributed immensely in that. It is a challenge to implement this system in Jharkhand and strong political willpower is required for that,” said the Roy after the meeting in Raipur.

There are two corporations in Chhattisgarh under the food and civil supplies and both are running in profits with all professionalism. Saryu Roy lauded the system which is also taking care of PACS, paddy procurement and seed and fertilizer distribution.

He also discussed at length with officials about running the PDS shops in Chhattisgarh along with the mechanism adopted and rules formulated for that. Notably no person runs PDS shops there and instead Women SHGs, panchayats and cooperatives do that.
