'Image conscious' Cong lets off Saw, Mallik!

Fate of the probe against two Congress Ministers —Yogendra Saw and Mannan Mallik — who open rack-up for plum portfolios is going to be no different from the numerous others initiated before by the Congress leadership.

Following the initial ruckus, the State unit of the party has made up its mind to provide amnesty and let them go away with just a warning.

"Warning has been given to them and they have also responded and assumed their charges. The in-charge may ask them to explain their point but it is unlikely that any penal action is going to follow after that," said a senior office-bearer of the party. All relevant materials such as media reports and video footages would be presented before in-charge of party affairs BK Haripasad who arrived here on Friday evening, he added.

Sources privy to the developments informed that despite having sufficient materials to act against the belligerent leaders in hand, the party dragged its feet in an attempt to save it from sending out a 'wrong message'.

"It would not have been proper to remove them as both of them were inducted into the Cabinet after much deliberation. This was the decision the party high command took solely and stern action would have put it in the dock and vindicated the strong voices opposing their claims," said a top leader in the Pradesh Congress Committee.

Both the Ministers had openly expressed dissatisfaction over the portfolios allocated to them by Chief Minister Hemant Soren after the second expansion of his Cabinet last week.

While Saw, in a brazen act of defending his demand, referred to the "services" he had to put before Congress high command to get the ministerial berth, Mallik termed the departments insignificant with lower budget and refused to join.

Acts of Congressmen have been taking tolls on the image of the party earlier as well. Not much before the Congress headquarters at Ranchi had turned into an open battlefield with firearms and lathis in the presence of Hariprasad. Supporters of Rajendra Singh and Mallik, both designated as Ministers in the coalition Government formed later, came face to face but without any disciplinary action to follow. The three-member panel formed to probe the incident is yet to meet by the way.
