IIM in vicinity; Cheri villagers in dark?

Published on:

Friday morning brought news for the residents of Cheri — IIM to get land in Cheri, however, many in the small village are either unaware of the decision made 15 kms away from their village or are shying away from making any negative comment until the Government begins with land acquisition.

“Is it the same institution which was proposed at NagriIJ” exclaimed Suresh Mahato adding, “I saw the news in the paper this morning. I have no idea where the institute will be built.”For Mahato institutions like IIM will bring fortune for the people but its long term impact will not be in the interest of the people of the village. like other proponents of ‘son of the soil’ theory Mahato is worry that the place will be deluded with settlers.

“land prices in the area will shoot up hence the villagers will sell their land. People will make money but they will displace themselves in the process,” added Mahato. The proposal which is still blossoming has to clear many stages before it can be implemented on ground. According to small ration shop owner in Cheri, Ganesh Munda it is too early to expect too much at the moment. “Time only holds the answer,” tersely replied Munda on whether Cheri will get benefit of IIM coming up in its vicinity.

Interestingly, none of the two villagers or anyone else in the village confirmed the news report of a talk between land holders and Government with regard to transfer of land to the IIM. Incidentally, Cheri is the third proposed site for the IIM after Government failed to provide land at Nagri and Raja Ulatu in Namkom. According to the proposal IIM will be provided with around 100 acres of land-82.13 acres of Government and 17.97 acres of GM land.

Contrary to other places, Cheri and Manatu areas welcomed Government’s move to set up Central University, a fact often acknowledged by officials of the Central University.
