Hybrid goats for 'Qurbani' under drone's eye on Bakrid

Shahrukh, Sultan, Baba Nawaab or Chand…they all belong to different States. But this year these hybrid goats will be sacrificed on Bakrid in Capital city.

Due to the unavailability of hybrid goats here in State, traders have brought goats from Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar including Vellore and Haryana Border. Notably, all traders associated with the trade have done good business here and the average cost of such goats went upto `30,000 and above.

Meanwhile, Police have said that the security arrangements for Bakrid are beefed up with no chance for anti-social elements or hate-mongers to be allowed to create any chance of hatred on the occasion of this Muslim festival.

“Other than security personnel keeping close vigil at every point, we are going to deploy three drones in the sky over Doranda, Hindpidhi and other areas with dense Muslim population,” said SSP Kuldeep Dwivedi on Monday.

“One important thing is that the city has a long history of social harmony, and it leaves not many things to worry. However, there might be a handful of hate-mongers and anti-social elements, who can target any happy moment. We are all ready to take them on,” added Dwivedi.

The Nawaab breed from Uttar Pradesh, Sirohi from Rajasthan, Jamunapari and Boer from Allahabad including Dumba from Kashmir are available in the local market here.

A Seller requesting anonymity in the capital city, said, “90 per cent goats sold during ‘Bakrid’ in the local market of Ranchi are brought from different States and the remaining 10 per cent are those local breed of goats that are available here on regular basis. Though the smaller goats are sold here in quite a good number but the demand for hybrid goats have increased considerably. People from other districts and adjoining areas too visit the place to purchase the hybrid goats.”

The hybrid goats are available at a pocket pinch of ` 25,000 to `2 lakh. Traders are of the opinion that due to the negligence of State Government towards livestock rearing, hybrid goats are not available even in the rural pockets of Jharkhand at present. However, few self help groups in the outskirts of the cities have initiated hybrid goats rearing culture to boost rural economy but have failed to meet the existing demand of the market.

Few traders even claimed that, they had to spent huge amount in transportation and in feeding these hybrid goats.

“looking at the demand, sellers reached the market with their goats a month ago. We have to spent additional money in transportation and feeding these hybrid varieties. However, they all are sold out during festival and buyers too have started pouring in from different parts of the city and adjacent areas. On an average, 500 small goats are being sold out everyday and people are ready to spend more than `50,000 for good hybrid variety,” said Mohammad Akram, a goat seller at MG Road, who is in the business since 2011.
