HRD Minister meets Guv over V-Cs' appointments

Governor Syed Ahmed assured State Human Resources Development Minister Geetashree Oraon on Tuesday to look at the legal aspects of formation of search committee for State Universities Vice-Chancellor’s (V-C) appointments in the State.

Notably, last month the Minister had sent a letter to the Governor mentioning her objection on formation of search committee for the respective selection, which is not mentioned in the Jharkhand State Universities Act 2000. The minister had also requested the Governor to take state government’s consultation for this purpose since it is a mandatory norm of the Jharkhand State Universities Act 2000.

“The Minister requested the Governor to consider the reservation of domiciles for this appointment process of VCs in four state universities including Nilamber Pitamber University, Kolhan University, Sido-Kanhu Murmu University and Vinoba Bhave University,” Oraon’s personal secretary said.

On January 31, Chief Minister Hemant Soren had assured Oraon of not approving the selection of candidates for the VCs’ posts if the State Government was not consulted in accordance with Jharkhand State Universities Act 2000.

Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee State President Sukhdeo Bhagat also met the Governor and requested him to sort out the VC appointment issue at the earliest so that it is not delayed due to the upcoming lok Sabha elections wherein the process will remain in a pause condition.

Notably, the search committee had taken the interview of 66 shortlisted candidates on January 25 at Nyaya Sadan for VC and Pro-VC posts in the mentioned universities.
